I visited the glacier in Hintertux among other things. It is a large glacier in Austria and you can ski there in the winter and during the spring, summer and autumn season as well. It was awesome to ski on this vast glacier and experience the glacier in reality. The ski lifts are readjusted each year as necessary according to the movements of the glacier. We only had a short snippet of sun while I was there and the rest of the day was covered in clouds with very limited view, so that I have inserted some other pictures here, so you can see the glacier panorama. You have to stay on the designated ski slopes when skiing there, because there can be crevasses in the glacier surface and there have been some instances in the past, where skiers have vanished and have only been found years later after falling into a crevasse.
You can also visit the glacier exhibition and see what the caverns below the glacier look like, even with boats. I found it an amazing experience, but on the other hand was lucky to come out in one piece again. Sometimes you can hear sounds, which signify movement in the glacier and the feeling of being under such a vast layer of ice is an experience you don't have every day. You can also visit the largest marble caves of Europe there, which make you feel even smaller. Really amazing that there is a world hidden beneath your feet.
The glacier has known many times during history where it was either not there at all, or was smaller and it has also been much larger, covering the surrounding areas. During the last hundreds of years, it has been shrinking slowly a few meters per year and it is postulated that it could be gone in 50 years time.
This video of the ice world under the Hintertux glacier will give you an impression (I did not film it myself).
I also studied the inviromental geography, cultural geography and topography of the world,
with a speacial focus on Asia, North Africa, Europe and the Alps.
